Men, Woman and Families - 3 books

or Let me be a Woman - Elisabeth Elliot

'When you promise, in the wedding ceremony, to love, you are not promising how you expect to feel. You are promising a course of action which begins on your wedding day and goes on as long as you both shall live'

3 books in one - looking at Let me be a woman these are a collection of letters Elisabeth wrote to her daughter a few weeks before she was about to be married. The letters are beautifully written, very wise, reflective, instructional and very moving.

The meaning of Marriage -Tim and Kathy Keller

“To be loved but not known is comforting but superficial. To be known and not loved is our greatest fear. But to be fully known and truly loved is, well, a lot like being loved by God. It is what we need more than anything. It liberates us from pretense, humbles us out of our self-righteousness, and fortifies us for any difficulty life can throw at us.”

This book is brilliant! biblical and practical. It's message is in the title its about the meaning of marriage. Which is centred on the gospel, A man and Woman brought together in a life long monogamous relationship, what that means and how we live it out.

Marriage - Paul Tripp - Marriage is an updated version of What did you expect

“One way God establishes beauty is by putting things that are different next to each other. Isn’t this exactly what God does in marriage? He puts very different people next to each other. This is how he establishes the beauty of a marriage. The moon would not be so striking if it hung in a white sky; in the same way, the striking beauty of a marriage is when two very different people learn to celebrate and benefit from their differences and to be protected from their weaknesses by being sheltered by the other’s strength.”

One of my most favourite authors and teachers, Paul gives a deep understanding of character and change and understanding and forgiveness.

Brian Edwards - No longer two

Is a study to do during your engagement in preparation for marriage - helps you to consider and discuss things that you might assume and wouldn't necessarily talk about. Its been around for a while but it's so good that it stood the test of time.

Sharon James - God's design for Women

'Marriage is a creation ordinance, built into nature, for all societies at all times. It is not just for Christians (unlike baptism and the Lord's Supper which are for Christians only).'

There is one chapter in this book about marriage (The whole book is worth a read though!) - She talks about the roles and responsibilities of men and women, marriage and its picture in a gender confused society.
